Dozens of people have been forced to flee their homes after a major fire broke out in a block of flats this afternoon.

Twelve fire engines and around 60 firefighters are currently tackling the blaze in the rooftop storage area of Jubilee Court in London Road, Thornton Heath.

London Road has been closed between Thornton Heath Pond and the junction with Leander Road, causing queues of traffic to build up either side of the cordon.

Bus routes 60 and 109 are being diverted along Brigstock Road, Melfort Road and Norbury Crescent.

British Red Cross staff have been called to the scene to help run a refuge centre for the 100 people stuck outside their homes.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said 25 per cent of the roof and 5 per cent of the fourth floor have already been damaged by the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unkown at this stage.
