A famous cricketer is coming to Chessington to join young hopefuls in the nets.

Sir Garfield ‘Gary’ Sobers will visit Chessington Cricket Club on Thursday, June 2, to take part in a youth cricket training session.

He will watch over a six-a-side game between the older juniors, assist a group of under 14s in a net training session and another group of 11 year olds in fun fielding routines.

Bob Cook, a coach at the club, managed to pull off the coup, inviting Sir Gary as part of the promotion of an annual under 19 competition in Barbados.

Simon Burge, communications manager at Chessington Cricket Club, said: “Sobers is widely accepted as the greatest all rounder ever to play the game. He will spend approximately three hours at the club taking time to talk to the young players about his experiences and cricket in general while answering any questions.”

Sir Gary captained the West Indies and was knighted by the Queen in 1975. He scored 8,032 runs and made 20 centuries in 93 test matches showing his prowess with both the bat and ball.

He will be at the club at the Francis Barker Recreation Ground off Leatherhead Road from about 4.30pm and 7.30pm.
