A woman who had a piece of wedding day jewellery ripped from her neck during a daylight street robbery in Croydon has been reunited with it following a police raid in Norbury.

The 33-year-old was devastated when the necklace, which her husband gave her the day they were married, was snatched from her in Dennett Road on May 6.

Officers who found the necklace at a house in Northborough Road, Norbury spotted it had names and a wedding date engraved on it, and called the woman in to South Norwood police station to tell her the good news.

She said: “My husband gave me the necklace on our wedding day, so it has a great sentimental value to me and I’m just so pleased to have it back.”

The attack was the latest in a string of jewellery snatches across Croydon, with 27 being recorded by police since the start of April.

Detective Constable David Smailes, who returned the necklace to its owner, said: “Unfortunately there have been a few incidents of thieves targeting Asian women in particular for their gold jewellery.

“Our advice is to keep expensive jewellery covered up or to leave it at home.

“We are working hard to identify those involved in these crimes and bring them to justice, but the public can also help us by remaining vigilant and taking these basic precautions.”

Anyone with information about jewellery thefts or who may have witnessed an incident can contact the robbery squad on 020 8649 1334, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

- Two teenagers were arrested in connection with the robbery and bailed to return to a south London police station on May 20 pending further inquiries.

Anton Brown, 19, of Northborough Road has been charged with handling stolen goods, while the other man was released without charge.

Mr Brown will appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on May 26.
