Green-fingered firefighters have followed the example of Tom and Barbara in the Good Life and scooped the title of greenest fire station in London.

Surbiton fire station is in the same town as where the comedy was set and its self-sufficiency impressed judges who hailed it the most energy efficient.

The station has converted a roof terrace where they can grow their own produce and so far home-grown strawberries, potatoes and figs have used to feed the hungry crews.

Firefighter Simon Jakeman’s son Finlay, six, helped with the garden and picked out red, blue, white and green flowers to represent the colours of the watches.

Mr Jakeman said: “I hope what we’re doing here inspires other people to be greener. In my spare time I am involved in a community project with neighbours, friends and family to grow our own food.

“It’s all come from the idea that everything is interconnected and that we all need to reconnect just a little bit and bring the good life back to our communities, by growing together.”

Firefighters switch off lights and have uniform recycling bins, all encouraged by station mangaer Mark Ripley, who has provided a notice board where crews can find information on being green.

The station received a £250 cheque from TEAM Energy Auditing Agency, donated to the FireFighters Charity.
