Police are to wear CCTV cameras on their heads to deter late night troublemakers from the streets of Kingston.

Town centre officers believe the sight of the cameras will make drinkers think twice about committing a crime or public order offence.

Evidence taken from the head-cams will also be able to be used in court to prosecute criminals.

Mark Byford, chairman of Pubwatch and manager of McCluskys, said: “We already use two and Oceana use some as well.

“You have got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to worry about. People won’t be able to argue they didn’t do it when they are caught on camera.”

PC James Larden-Price said: “People tend to behave better when they are being filmed.”

The news comes after it was revealed that facial recognition CCTV was also being looked at in a bid to keep the town centre safe.

Kingston town cars also revealed it was considering bringing in its own head cameras for kiosk operators after a spate of assaults on its minicab drivers last month.

A trial of the police cameras, which are worn on the side of the head, is due to take place in April.
