Kingston College to merge with Carshalton College

BREAKING NEWS: Kingston College to merge with Carshalton College BREAKING NEWS: Kingston College to merge with Carshalton College

Kingston College has announced plans to merge with Carshalton College after the Government cut education funding.

Kingston College could not rule out job losses or a reduction in its current six sites in the town centre, but said the enlarged institution could offer a wider choice of subject areas.

Both colleges said they would retain a presence in their areas.

The merger will not take place before 2012, and will require Government permission before it can go ahead.

A 12-month consultation with staff, students and stakeholders is underway.

Kingston College currently has 11,000 students, while Carshalton has 7,000.

In June new principal Peter Mayhew-Smith said the college would cut staff and foreign language courses to deal with a £2.5m deficit.

Is Sutton losing its identity with public service mergers despite the Government policy stated to devolve power to the local people? Courts to move to Croydon, Police to merge with Merton, college to merge with Kingston, waste disposal to a consortium of boroughs have all been reported in the press. Never mind if so the council have taken steps they say to put Sutton on the map with its roughly hewn wooden menagerie attracting visitors and business.

This story has the undercurrent of Kingston College taking over Carshalton College, with the new merged college called... Kingston College!

Given the closer proximity of Croydon, and far, far better transport links between Croydon and Sutton than between Sutton and Kingston, would that merger not be a better option? Or is this another LibDem love-in?

I would be quite happy for Kingston College to be shut down and let Carshalton deal with what passes for students these days; it would make Kingston a lot cleaner and probably safer too!

HOPEFULLY, it won't be long before Kingston University suffers a similar fate. With its recent mismanagement, including spending over £800,000 on defending two staff legal claims, as well as several academic scandals, it really ought to be shut tight.
