Surrey County Council (SCC) has welcomed the news of a surge in adults enrolling on IT courses.

SCC announced a 20 per cent rise in adults enrolling in computer courses, as in the last academic year more than 1,000 adults have been signing up in a quest to become IT literate.

This comes about as the council seeks to meet its promise of helping 10,000 residents get online for the first time by 2012, as part of a nationwide project promoting the benefits of the web.

SCC cabinet member for digital inclusion Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos said: “A 20 per cent rise in a year for the number of adults taking computer courses is hugely encouraging. The people who have most to gain from the internet – whether to overcome isolation or to save money – are often the ones who are missing out.”

Surrey’s success coincides with research by the Office of National Statistics that shows more than 9m British adults have never used the internet, with the elderly and people on lower incomes least likely ever to have connected.

County council computer courses are run from centres in Camberley, Farnham, Guildford, Molesey and Woking. Brochures listing courses are available at Surrey’s 54 libraries.
