Antisocial drivers in Hersham were stopped by police as part of the year-long Drive Smart campaign on Wednesday, September 1.

As part of the campaign, Surrey Police, along with other agencies including the DVLA, stopped a number of drivers, resulting in a total of 50 fixed penalty notices being issued for failure to wear a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving.

A further 1,400 vehicles had their details checked using the police’s automatic number plate recognition, while 11 drivers were given verbal warnings about the possible results of poor driving.

Elmbridge neighbourhood Sergeant Charlotte Chambers said: “Antisocial driving is the most common issue raised at neighbourhood meetings and the day of action involved local safer neighbourhood teams working closely with our partners to tackle the problem.

“The activity was designed to target the issues which Elmbridge residents have raised and we made some excellent interventions to address selfish and antisocial driving.

“I hope this gives local people confidence that together with our partners we are listening to them and we will do our best to address the issues they raise.

“We cannot solve every problem but we are determined to do our best and have an impact, which will contribute to the ongoing Drive Smart campaign.”

The campaign targets a range of driving behaviours that affect the lives of other road users or local residents.

These include tailgating, bad or inconsiderate parking, using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel, speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt and generally thoughtless or reckless driving.

The campaign was set up after Councillor Andrew Povey, leader of Surrey County Council, pledged £1m to crack down on antisocial driving.
