Pubpsy's anorak and trilby disguise worked so well this week readers that I actually became invisible.

Or, at least that was the impression I got from the staff at The Goat.

Much of my evening there was spent at the severely understaffed bar waiting for someone to pour me the round of drinks I was sent to get.

Maybe it was slightly busier than usual because that useless bunch of overpaid and over-rated football players that represent England were struggling to beat those giants of European Football Hungary, but that is still no excuse.

I just don't like having to wait and then, when you do get served, having to explain what a lager top is because the girl serving you doesn't know.

Apart from that, The Goat is rather pleasant and a lot bigger inside than it looks.

Once you do get to order your drinks there's a very good selection and not the standard crap like Carling and Carlsberg, it was more the fancy stuff like Amstell and Peroni that came in their proper glasses.

One of our team got very excited because Wandle was on tap and he would happily bathe in that if he could.

The England game was only being shown on one screen which was actually rather good so long as you weren't there specifically to watch that.

It meant you could socialise rather than stare at a big screen in silence all night.

The crowd were all pretty much twenty-somethings but the bar managed to find a good balance between trendy and traditional, making it very comfortable.

The food was good too and there was a lot of variety.

The poor service may just have been that night as it seemed a couple of the staff were new so I will forgive them this once because the rest of the place (even the slightly scary giant goats head on the wall) was absolutely fine.

How the pub rates (out of five):

DECOR: **** Good blend of new and old and very spacious.

DRINK: ***** Great selection unless you want one of those bland normal beers.

PRICE: ** Not the cheapest but then it is Clapham.

ATMOSPHERE: **** Sociable and not overtaken by loud and potty-mouthed football fans.

STAFF: ** Service was slow but they get an extra point for the girl wearing short denim shorts.
