Dragon boats and Chinese fans have come to Surbiton to celebrate Christ Church Primary School gaining Confucius Classroom status from the Confucius Institute at South Bank University.

The programme focuses on Chinese cultural activities that promote being active such as tai chi, and future plans include a club for students to learn Mandarin. The school also had its key values written in Chinese characters.

Headteacher Tracey Coton went to the Chinese embassy in London to mark the launch of the Expo 2010 in Shanghai, and was presented to the Chinese ambassador.

She said: “This is the start of a bigger project. We are going to be looking at developing video links with a school in China, and are really hoping to have children exchanging information.

“It’s really exciting and everyone had a wonderful time. They are finding it really enjoyable to find out about another culture.”
