A Kingston fashion student has used his grandmother as inspiration for his latest knitwear collection.
David Stoneman-Merret’s gran Nancy Holton was his biggest fan and delighted in his creative exploits until she died two years ago.
The 22-year-old decided there was no better way to celebrate her life than with a collection inspired by her.
He said: “Nan would find the idea of being the face of my collection hilarious. She would have loved the attention. She’d be telling everyone ‘That’s me on that top’.”
For one of his most spectacular pieces, he enlarged a favourite family photo of his gran wearing a Christmas party hat, and used it to form the centrepiece of on an over-sized jumper.
He also used digitised photos of wallpaper and cushions from his gran’s house to create patterns for some of the knitted garments in his winter range.
The styling of Mr Stoneman-Merret’s outfits was inspired by the later period in his gran’s life, when she was suffering from dementia.
Visiting her in a care home, he met other residents living with the condition and drew inspiration from the way they mixed day and nightwear.
His collection will go on display at Graduate Fashion Week on Monday, June 7, at Earls Court.
