Low budget Kingston film attracts big name star

It might be a low budget movie, filmed in austere locations such as New Malden's CI Tower - but its cast list is pretty impressive.

Budding Kingston movie maker, James Webber, couldn't believe his luck when he recruited as his leading lady an actress who has just finished a movie with Hollywood star Gillian Anderson.

And actress, Francesca Fowler, whose credits include ITV's Bad Girls and BBC's sumptuous drama, Rome, agreed to act in Mr Webber's latest budget independent production, Commitment, for free.

Mr Webber, a 25-year-old from Ham, works in telesales by day. But in his spare time he has written and directed the film in a bid to make his break into the film industry. He wants to send the 20-minute comedy, filmed on location in Kingston and New Malden, to firms who he hopes will realise his potential.

He said: "I am sick of not being able to get anywhere - so I have been shooting a short film locally and I auditioned actors, including Francesca. Now we have finished at and it's looking quite good."

Francesca agreed to act in Commitment after seeing some of Bournemouth-born Mr Webber's previous work - and despite her impressive credits she agreed to work for free.

Mr Webber said it was tough finding time to film in between his full-time job, Francesca's other acting commitments and the other actors' schedules.

He said that he worked local scenes into the script to ensure they could do all the filming in Kingston. And he said offices like the C I Tower in New Malden proved very helpful in providing locations for free.

And he added: "It's gone so well that we are actually going to do another film together."

The next hurdle for Mr Webber, who has made other short films through his firm Finger Cuff Productions, is to find somewhere to screen his film. He is currently looking at options in Richmond.
