Lib Dems 'exaggerated' threat to Kingston Hospital's A&E and maternity services, says Zac Goldsmith

Zac Goldsmith has expressed concern the campaign to save the accident and emergency and maternity departments at Kingston Hospital may have been exaggerated for political ends.

The Conservative candidate for the Richmond Park parliamentary seat said he and fellow Tory candidate Helen Whately, who is fighting for the Kingston and Surbiton seat currently held by Edward Davey, would fight to protect the hospital if there was a threat.

On Monday, Richmond Park MP Susan Kramer and Mr Davey revealed they had met high-ranking officials and been told NHS London plan to close A&E and maternity units in south-west London.

They said a shortlist of two options included the closure of the departments at the Galsworthy Road hospital.

Gavin Marsh, clinical director of healthcare for south-west London, denied any hospitals were to close but would not give assurances about specific departments and a pre-emptive campaign was launched to try and stop the closures.

The NHS has confirmed a review of departments in the area is under way but repeatedly stated no decisions have been made.

Mr Goldsmith said: “The hospital has been under a NHS London review for many months, along with a number of other hospitals, and since the launch of that review, nothing seems to have changed.

“My fear is that the Lib Dems have exaggerated a problem in order to create an election opportunity. If so, they will have needlessly frightened vulnerable members of the community into believing they will lose a valuable service.

“We are all fed up of Labour, and I won’t defend them, but we’ve had enough of fabricated threats from politicians.

“These sorts of campaigns have to be honest, or real people are affected.”

Mr Goldsmith said if there was a plan to close departments at the hospital the Conservative Party would “campaign with every ounce of their energy to protect it”.

He added: “Nothing can happen to the hospital before the general election, and if the Conservatives win, David Cameron has repeatedly promised ‘we will stop Labour's forced closure of A&E and maternity units’.”

Ms Kramer said: “Ed Davey and I were told about this by five separate people in four separate meetings, a mixture of chief executives and senior clinicians.

“We have confirmed this proposal is actively under consideration.”

It almost pains me to agree with a Tory but this is clearly a trumped-up pre-election panic. I made the same point on the Lib. Dems. campaign Facebook page and they deleted it (no free speech there then). And if it was true, are our MPs suggesting that they would override the official review and so increase costs and reduce the service?

I agree with reesmf on this one!

When I read the original story it struck me immediately that this was scare-mongering by the Liberals and, sure enough, it has come to pass that they have over-egged the pudding...again.

Clearly, if there are cuts of this nature an outcry will be raised- and rightly too. It is typical of the Labour Party's thinking (and the Liberals) that you go for the 'Big One' whenever there are cuts eg close the main cancer ward or A & E- they did this all the time in the past, mainly with the help of the trades unions who seem silent on this now.

The trouble with Labour and the Liberals is they are currently out of sympathy with the ordinary public, and the TUC is somewhere in the left-wing stratosphere when it comes to normalcy.

It is therefore, no surprise to me that reesmf has to agree with Zac' sensible point of view. I hope you support him on May 6th as he will make an excellent MP.

Phillip Taylor and reesmf, it seems pretty clear that the closure of these wards is being actively considered. If we wait until an announcement is made before making a fuss and protesting it may already be too late!

Personally I think this smacks of pettiness from Mr Goldsmith, especially after his attempts to party politicise the campaign against parking charges in Richmond Park (which was previously working fairly effectively in a cross-party way). I hope he will reconsider and join Susan Kramer in making the case for keeping A&E and maternty services in Kingston.

The last post by gcrozier is beautifully fanciful.
His two bold statements are purely incorrect. The rally in Richmond Park is entirely cross party with Zac Goldsmith inviting Susan Kramer to address the rally.
Secondly, where is it ever suggested that Zac is not considering supporting any campaign to keep A&E and maternity services in Kingston?
gcrozier, I believe you have shown the necessary credentials for your ambitions to become a liberal democrat councillor, you clearly possess the ability to put words in your opposition's mouth.
As a resident of Kew, I thoroughly disappointed you may possibly represent me.

We now know for sure that this campaign was invented by the Lib Dems as one of their activists has been boasting that the idea was cooked up at his kitchen table. He's been outed here http://twitter.com/K

Yes, reesmf, I have just seen that Kevin Maguire from the 'Daily Mirror' is behind it.

For those who do not know, Mr Maguire is an inverted snob for whom anyone he dislikes is either a Tory or out to destroy the working classes... actually, that is what his game is as an unreconstructed leftie when he is not on TV spouting this nonsense.

Phillip Taylor, it was not actually Kevin Maguire who cooked up the story about Kingston Hospital. It was a Kingston-based Lib-Dem activist called Dan Falchikov. He has run as a Lib Dem for council unsuccessfully in the past. Kevin Maguire's detective work is very good as he not only picks up on Mr Falchikov boasting about his brilliance on the phone, he then covertly takes a photo of him and gets him identified.
Politics is a dirty game but for the lib-dems, a party I would naturally favour, to build an enormous campaign in opposition to something they have just sexed up is a new low. This move must have been premediated as our seemingly honest MP, Mrs Kramer, had even bought the rights to a website for this campagin months ago. Please leave party politics out of our lives, especially when it is about such an important and vital institution as Kingston Hospital.

And where is Eleanor Tunnicliffe the Labour rep for this boro? Ive emailed her asking what the Labout take is on this.

As for Zac......well bet he hasnt ever had to catch 2 buses to get to Kingston and he confirms that a 'review' is being made with cuts of departments being made......so best form of defence is attack.

Hands off Kingston maternity and A&E!!! No way can we poor folk afford the time or fares to travel to St Georges Tooting.

Thank you, HV, for pointing out the fact that the Liberals are the 'nasty' party round here.

And to answer Riverlady, I would never assume that Mr Goldsmith has not used the buses if I were you! We see many people round here using all sorts of transport methods and a blanket condemnation is never wise...we leave that to the Liberals.

And, yes, where is Eleanor in all this?

Phillip....Zac will never get pregnant and have to make the journey on the buses with other children or buggies. He is green but he has a choice.......most do not....it is the bus that is our main form of transport + Boris has made sure that oyster users unemployed or sick have to jump through costly hoops to get the discount they are entitled to. And to renew it every 6 months. Torys dont care about those on JSA, IC or Income support.Boris has proved that.

Zac Goldsmith is quite right to highlight that nothing can happen until after a general election, and it is quite wrong for Lib Dem MPs Susan Kramer, and Ed Davey to start scaremongering as part of their general election campaign.

What this also proves is Kramer, and Davey appear to be following their party’s codified book of dirty tricks – entitled “Effective Opposition” – with its mantra of: “be wicked, act shamelessly, stir endlessly” – plus “engage in negative campaigning”, and “exaggerate”.

And now Kevin Maguire has exposed the source of this scaremongering story – Lib Dem activist Dan Falchikov.

gcrozier, Kew – who I presume is the Lib Dem council candidate of the same name – does himself no favours by accusing Zac Goldsmith of playing politics when those are the tactics of his own Lib Dem party!

And riverlady, Barnes is grossly unfair on Boris Johnson. It was on his Conservative watch that JSA now have discounts on Oyster Cards!

Actually the reason it got politicised was because ordinary people got hacked off with complacent politicos sitting around whining harmoniously but doing nothing and put a boot up their jaxies to get something done. When is the message going to get through to these people that what the electorate wants is someone who can actually "get something done"? The local candidates list for May 2010 isn't exactly overflowing with them is it? At least Susan Kramer got the low-flying planes stopped. No, that's wrong...

Back on topic, I love the bit about the website Susan Kramer bought a month in advance of the "breaking news". This topic is faintly reminiscent of New Labour's 1997 "24 hours to save the NHS". I know the Lib-Dems champion recycling but really...
