Unwanted children’s Christmas presents could help Thai orphans on the fifth anniversary of the Boxing Day tsunami, after a Kingston pub launched an innovative charity campaign.
The Norbiton and Dragon, in Clifton Road, wants people to donate children’s Christmas gifts, half of which will be taken to the Baan Tharn Namchai orphanage in Khao Lak, one of the worst affected areas of Thailand.
The other half will be used by UK charity KidsOut to provide toys for children fleeing domestic violence.
Last month a survey of 500 parents showed that a fifth of gifts given to their children were unsuitable.
Pub manager Carl Elliot said: “We’re hoping our customers will embrace the true spirit of Christmas and donate their unsuitable children’s presents to our campaign, giving kids who aren’t so lucky a happy new year. We have been amazed in the past at the generosity of our customers and I am sure they will step up once more to make ‘Project Re-Gift’ a real success.”
All donated gifts have to be new to meet the charity’s regulations.
