Kingston and Surbiton MP Edward Davey unveils his new book at Maple Infants School, Surbiton

Kingston and Surbiton MP Edward Davey has joined a group of Surbiton’s Maple Infant School pupils in being immortalised in print, following the release of a children’s book explaining what MPs do to help people.

As well as showing Mr Davey helping constituents with their problems, writing to Government ministers and attending the House of Commons, one of the book’s scenes shows him visiting the Surbiton school to speak to them about his role as an MP.

Aimed at five to eight-year-olds, the book is part of a range called People who help us, which aims to help children understand what a range of people including doctors, farmers and firefighters do for a living.

Mr Davey said: “I’m pleased the publishers agree MPs are also helping the community. It’s just trying to give them a gentle introduction to the sort of things that an MP does.

“I think it’s important they know about the wider community and the whole series of people that help us, so they can learn about different jobs that people do.”

The MP added he would donate the £100 worth of books he was given by the publishers to local schools, saving one for his young son who features in its pages.
