School boys attack Carshalton bus driver

A pack of school boys threw snow and ice at a moving bus and then assaulted the driver with kicks and punches in full view of shocked parents.

The students threw the snowballs at the Go-Ahead 154 bus on Stanley Park Road, Carshalton at 3.30pm on Wednesday near Total garage as it travelled towards Sutton.

One witness, who did not want to be named, said when the driver stopped the bus and confronted the group, they swore and then attacked him.

When worried passers-by asked the students to stop one said: “I’ll do what I like’’, the witness said.

The bus driver, who then either slipped on the ice or was pushed to the ground, was then kicked by the students.

When the students finally dispersed after further intervention from passers-by the driver picked himself up, insisted he was okay, boarded the bus, and continued with his journey.

The witness described the students, who were believed to be wearing uniform from a nearby school, as “hooligans’’.

She said: “They were behaving like thugs.

“They were throwing blocks of ice at the bus and when he asked them to stop they attacked him.

“He was kicked over and fell on his back. When we tried to intervene one of them said ‘I’ll do what I like’.

“Some people did try to get him up, but he was quite shaken and wanted to be left alone."

The witness, who said the group were walking in the opposite direction when they began throwing ice at the bus, added: “I was with my children who were quite clearly distressed and were asking why the students had pushed over the driver and if he was going to be alright.

“It was completely unacceptable, we have got to make a stand against hooligans like this.’’ Go-Ahead confirmed the assault on their bus driver.

A Sutton police spokesman said the incident was being looked into by a police school liaison officer. He said: "Wallington Police station received a report at 4.20pm on Wednesday February 4 about an incident about 30 minutes earlier involving a bus travelling through Carshalton and Wallington.

"A group of boys were seen to throw snowballs at the bus. The bus then stopped and the driver got out. An altercation followed.

"The police officer responsible for liaising with schools in this area is looking into the matter. No complaint has been received from the driver."

What total scumbags. Most buses have outside recording equipment, so let's hope these absolute pigs and their school are named and shamed and that the school and the Police take the appropriate action. These children have zero respect and should be taught a hard lesson in it.
There's having fun, throwing snow about, then there is endangering the life of passengers and kicking a bus driver when he is down on the floor.
What a total disgrace these scumbags are.

During this period of snow I witnessed gangs of children launching snowball attacks on car drivers and pedestrians.

It's one thing to have a snowball fight with your own friends who are willing to take part in a bit of fun, but when you launch an unprovoked attack on complete strangers, that must be a criminal assault.

I hope the police will be using any available CCTV evidence to identify people who carried out these assaults and deal with them in the appropriate way.

I know using CCTV to uphold the law is not a lucrative revenue raising practice, as for instance issuing parking tickets, but the public should be protected from this thuggish behaviour.

Regarding the bus driver; this must receive particular attention from the authorities and the low-life concerned prosecuted and jailed.

I was present at the scene and did try to diffuse the situation and help the driver. Happy to pass on any information which may be helpful to police.
Usually there is a community police presence at the bus stop shame they weren't there yesterday. My 10 year old son was upset at seeing the incident too.I hope the driver was not hurt too badly as he did fall very heavily on his back

Why have they not said what school the little s**ts are from.
I'm all for a snowfight, even out in the park on Monday I got into a snowfight with some random strangers, all in fun.
But when they think it's fun to endanger people by lobbing snowballs at people & vehicles it takes the p**s I think.
How about we use the left over ice & chuck it at them??

It's not the kids that need to be named and shamed; it's the parents. Honestly, who brings up their kids to behave like this? At least adults can usually appreciate the consequences of their actions, even when it's not really fair to nail it totally on the kids. After all, the kids might not know any better.

At least the kids can be put in care and given a new identity if absolutely necessary, but the buck's got to stop somewhere. Why should the rest of society pay for the mistakes that the parents have made?

Fred1, to be honest, I dont think their parents know how they are behaving.
Certainly when I was this age a few years back my parents didnt know half of what I got up to.
I was out causing trouble, although not as bad as the kids about today, & even thought my parents knew I weren't an angel they didnt know half of the s**t I got into.
Just go straight for the kids I say, if you punish the parets they'll just be glad it weren't them that got in trouble & carry on

I don't think they're allowed to say, but not too many school children would be in the area at 3.30 unless they were from the local school.
