A Chessington family has told how they almost lost their business after a close friend stole almost £4,000 from them.

Peter Rowland, who runs chauffeur business PR Cars, employed old school friend Thomas Mustoe, 24, as a favour, when he developed a cannabis addiction and dropped out of Kingston University.

Mustoe admitted three counts of theft, pocketing money every week from three of the family’s businesses when he was asked to deposit it at the bank.

He was given a six month suspended prison sentence at Kingston Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

He was also ordered to do 180 hours of unpaid work, pay back all £4,394 to the Rowlands in compensation and attend a drug rehabilitation programme over the next 12 months.

Mustoe worked as an office administrator at his friend’s firm and was responsible for answering phones, taking bookings and “general admin”.

He was paid £125 a week - his pay being docked of a previous loan - which was not enough to fund his £20-a-day cannabis habit.

The former Kingston Grammar School pupil is part of a “family of high flyers” who were unaware he had dropped out of university and acquired debts, Mr Rowland claimed.

In court, defence solicitor Gary Bromelow read aloud positive character references from more than six friends and family members, most of whom were sitting in court to support him.

Magistrate Annette Reardon criticised Mustoe for betraying a close friend’s trust and, despite warning him he could have gone straight to prison, added: “Do not think that this is a less serious punishment. A lot is expected of you over the coming 12 months.”

Mr Rowland’s two sisters, who ran a dance school and beauty businesses, were also victims of Mustoe’s stealing when he was asked to bank money on their behalf.

Six members of their family were in court to see him sentenced.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Rowland said: “The only reason we are still afloat is because I was given some money by my mother.

“If we have a bad month it could spell the end of the business.”

Mr Rowland stood by his decision to report his friend to police and said he hoped Mustoe will now get the help he needs for drugs.

I went to primary school with the Rowlands' kids. They are a wonderful family and didn't deserve this. I wish the whole family all the best and I hope things get back on track soon.

i think the Rowland's are a bunch of ********! fair enough this guy did wrong to them and he deserves a wake up call!! but to take this matter so far going public with it is soooo petty and is done out of spite!! a majority of the facts stated in this story are not true! i know the Rowland's and £4000 is a drop in the ocean to them! don't think they even attempted to settle this out of court, would you not think of doing that first if they say they're doing this to help Thomas?? this guy took a wrong turn in his life and the Rowland wanted him in prison?? who needs friends like that, some sort of help that is!!!!

Right so you're saying you'd rather Peter did nothing about this?? Is that what you'd do? I wouldn't.

If the guy has a drug addiction he needs help, professional help. What makes him so special that the law doesn't apply to him? If he had been allowed to continue with his life as it was he would have done this to someone else. Ok so the Rowlands might be comfortable but what about his next victim?

Don't let your personal feelings cloud the facts, the guy broke the law.

Upon reading this, I wonder how "bad off" this business must be operating in order for 4000 to put them under. I know that if I were to run a business there isn't a chance that amount of funds would "spell the end of the business". I mean honestly, how poorly is this place ran??? And why has no one asked Why this "employer" was only paying 125 a week? Seems a little on the light side to me. I know I have been in jobs that were bad enough that I would have taken stuff from if given the chance. And I am sure there are lots of you out there that would do the same.

Now I am not saying that what this guy has done is right, but trying to put him in prison for such an amount of money seems to be absurd. I know I hope that I never have a friend that wants me in prison when he is wanting to get me help. I haven't heard of too many addicts that come out squeaky clean from being locked up.

It is easy to point fingers at the person in the headline, but not so easy to point fingers at yourself sometimes. Maybe everyone needs to take a look inside and judge themselves before looking ill at others.

Two of my friends were beaten the living daylights out of by a drunken thug in Kingston last christmas and he received a lighter sentence than this, it's ridiculous.
