THE transformation of a community garden on a Woolwich housing estate got off to a sizzling start last Sunday (July 15).
Willow Bank Community Garden, in Mulgrave Road, will create an oasis of cultivation on an unused and overgrown area.
Temperatures were raised by Peckham blacksmith Kevin Boys. Using a mobile forge he created a gate for the garden entrance, in a bee design.
Pupils from Cardwell Primary School, Councillor Rajwant Sidhu and volunteers also got stuck into the improvement work by digging pathways and flower beds.
The project was initiated by the St Mary's Gardening Action Group helped by environmental charity Groundwork, Greenwich Council and Beaver Housing.
