Walton residents have complained about an overgrown bush causing a blind spot on the Pankhurst Road, after an 11-year old boy on a bicycle was hit by a van last month.

Sherrie Watts, who lives on the stretch of the Pankhurst Road owned by PA Housing, said: “ He had apparently been on his bike and the van came round the corner and he clipped the bicycle wheel as the boy was cycling.”

Cllr Rachael Lake inspected the road yesterday, took photos of the overgrown bush and said she would speak to the housing association about cutting it back.

Speaking to the Surrey Comet, Cllr Rachael Lake said the bush is double the height it should be and a danger to residents.

“There’s obviously no line of sight and the pavement is covered, and this is a family area.

“If PA housing can’t give me a date, I am going to get highways engineers at county council because they will want to get it cleared immediately.”

A PA Housing spokesperson said the housing association tasked its contractor with cutting back the hedge two weeks ago after visiting the road and is waiting for work to start.

“We are very sorry to hear about the incident on Pankhurst Road. We wish the child a full and speedy recovery.

“There are a couple of things we need to sort out before work can begin, including asking vehicle owners to move their cars if they will hinder the work.

“We’re treating this as a priority and we will endeavour to get it completed as quickly as possible. We take pride in our neighbourhoods and aim to provide PA Housing tenants, and the wider community, with a pleasant and safe living space.”
