More than £58,000 has been awarded to two groups working with disadvantaged children and young people in Kingston by BBC Children in Need.

TAG Youth Club for Disabled Young People will get £30,000 over three years to provide a youth club for disabled young people in Richmond.

Meanwhile, Kingston's MAN&BOY will get £28,080 to host residential camps and relationship-building courses for boys experiencing a range of disadvantages, following today’s announcement.

Trevor Quy, director at MAN&BOY, said: “This funding will help us to reach more families in more boroughs, which will give children and young people the opportunity to get involved with and learn from a mixture of challenging activities – including climbing, electronics, and craft skills.

“In addition, we will deliver reflective group sessions run by qualified youth workers to build skills and self-esteem for local boys facing a range of disadvantages, from illness to mental health issues, giving them the tools to manage and negotiate relationships with others.”

TAG Youth Club for Disabled Young People’s initiative is a junior club for those aged between 10 and 15 years old, as well as a senior one for young people aged above 15.

The new grant will help with the running of the two, while funding activities such as dancing and singing lessons, and trips outside.

MAN&BOY, who work with boys and a male family member to develop supportive relationships, will use their grant to deliver their programme to more families.

The funding boost is the second round of money awarded to projects in 2018 so far by BBC Children in Need, bringing the total investment now to £236,000.

Kate Higginson, BBC Children in Need’s regional head of London and the south east, said: “It’s always so rewarding to be able to put the British public’s donations to work across London and the south east.

“This new funding will work hard to support local children and young people who need it most.”

BBC Children in Need awards grants at seven separate points during the year, funding two types of grants of which both are open to new or existing applicants.

A Main Grants Programme is for grants over £10,000 per year to support projects for up to three years, such as the one by TAG Youth Club for Disabled Young People.

The Small Grants Fund Programme also supports projects for up to three years, with grants up to and including £10,000 per year.
