A two-year old boy with suspected autism was found wandering down a busy three-lane road after being let out of nursery unsupervised.

Younis Hussaini, who goes to Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery in Cromwell Road, Kingston, went outside after another child’s parent held the door open for him at about 4pm on Wednesday, March 14, according to his mother, Dunia Alhaydari.

Ms Alhaydari said she has seen CCTV of her son walking nearly 100 metres down the road to near the turning into Hardman Road, before being spotted and rescued by other parents.

She said: “I was on my way to pick him up. When I found out, I was traumatised and demanded to see the CCTV. He walked at one point very close to the curb; when I saw the video that was the most distressing thing to me.

“That whole night I couldn’t sleep. And since then he’s been really nervous and anxious.”

Ms Alhaydari said it has affected Younis, who has delayed speech and learning difficulties, including suspected autism, too.

“He refuses to sleep if I don’t hug him,” she said. “Wherever I go, he has to come with me. I have no idea how much it’s impacted him.”

A statement to Surrey Comet from Monkey Day Puzzle Nursery, which Younis has attended since January, read: “On Wednesday, March 14, there was an incident at the Kingston nursery whereby the security system was breached.

“The child involved is safe and well; the parents were contacted on the same day, as soon after the incident as possible, and the incident has been fully reported to the local authority and Ofsted.

“As the child was mistakenly let out by a collecting parent we have reviewed our collection procedures and introduced additional security measures to ensure this cannot happen again.”
