A man was left with a serious head injury after an assault in Epsom town centre just before Christmas.

The victim left a bar with friends and a group he had met that evening at around 3am on Saturday, December 23.

While they were walking towards the Clock Tower, one of the men in the group reportedly hit the victim on the head, knocking him over.

Others in the group also reported being attacked by the man, but did not sustain any injuries.

Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the assault, and have released him under investigation.

Detective constable Lottie Simpkins, from East Surrey Criminal Investigation Department, said: “We spoke to a number of witnesses at the scene, but due to carrying out first aid on the victim were unable to identify and speak to all those in the vicinity.

“If you witnessed the incident or have any information that could assist our investigation, please get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference PR/45170142417.
