Kingston missed out on getting a railway station in 1834, when the London to Southampton line was built.

The town had to wait until 1863, after battling with Hampton Wick to have the terminus of the branch line from Twickenham.

It was not received well by everybody; thousands petitioned against the line being made, fearing future extensions to Norbiton and New Malden and the spoiling of their peaceful estates.

London and South Western Railway told a Parliamentary inquiry: "There is no probability of a line being carried on to Malden by the LSWR or any other company."

The above image was taken of the station in about 1910.
