Firefighters rescued a man from a car after a crash with a lorry in Chessington.

The Metropolitan Police were called by the Ambulance Service to the crash at 3.38pm today, between the two vehicles and a further parked car, which was empty.

The road was closed in both directions but has since reopened.

Two witnesses said the car came out of a garage onto the road almost immediately before the crash.

One of them, Chloe Ward, said: "He came out of the garage and onto the road, clipping the lorry and smashing into the parked car. We heard a massive bang."

Her sister Vicki said: "We were walking beside the road, and we were behind the parked cars. We nearly got hit. If it weren't for those cars we might well be dead."

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade confirmed they were called to Bridge Road at 3.45pm and released the man from a car.

An ambulance became wedged in the middle of the road and members of the public pitched in to shift it.

Georgina Owens, who also saw the crash, said she thought it was "a pretty amazing show of support from the locals".

The witnesses said the man managed to walk to the ambulance, and police confirmed he was taken to hospital with a suspected minor head injury.
