Proposals for a New Malden service station to sell alcohol 24 hours a day, seven days a week, have been thrown out by councillors.

Rose Cottage Service Station in Kingston Road, New Malden, on the behalf of Motor Fuel Limited applied the Kingston Council to sell late night refreshments between 11pm and 5am.

As well as permitting the sale by retail of alcohol, off premises, at all hours of the week the service station would also be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But on July 19, the council's licensing sub-committee refused the request, largely because of concerns for the service station becoming ‘intrusive’ and it could encourage unnecessary noise levels and anti-social behaviour late into the night.

It was also stated that the largely residential neighbourhood is experiencing this type of behaviour on a frequent basis.

A petition signed by 48 people was set up in opposition to the plans, in addition to four letters of objection. The lead petitioner addressed the committee and, it was reported in the council documents, said that a 24/7 licence 'would be intrusive and could encourage unnecessary levels of noise disturbance and anti-social behaviour for neighbouring residents late into the night when patrons purchase alcohol'.
