A 91-year-old Kingston man, who was one of the UK's oldest competitive cyclists has died after a crash.

Kingston Phoenix Road Club member Ray Dare was taking part in an age-related time trial on the A41 near Aylesbury on July 19 when he was involved in a collision with a van on July 19.

A statement posted on the Kingston Phoenix Road Club website later the same day said: “It is with huge sadness and shock that I am writing to tell you that Ray passed away this afternoon.”

John Beer, who was cycling with Ray, said: “Ray died doing what he loved. I'm sure he was well on his way to the record, he'd done the two turns and the long descent, which he would have loved.

“He was hit on a straight flat open piece of road, he had two miles to go. We should all remember him for the truly amazing cyclist and husband and step-father he was.”

One rider commented on a time trialling forum: “Such tragic news indeed. Our thoughts are with his wife, family, and friends. We were all in shock at the event today. RIP Ray.”

Thames Valley Police have confirmed to Surrey Comet that no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
