A man from Surrey who raised £60,000 for brain tumour research has been remembered at the Research Centre of Excellence at Imperial College where he fundraised the money.

Dan Wiggins, from Hersham, was told he had a brain tumour when he was aged 30 in 2006.

Dan was determined to raise awareness and funds for the Brain Tumour Research Campaign (BTRC) after learning that brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.

In 2010 he organised a 900 mile cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End raising £60,000. His mother, Rosalind, and brother in law, Ben, took part in the event.

In September 2015 Dan collapsed while sailing and was found in the water. He was taken to hospital where he died a few days later aged 39.

His mother Rosalind has helped to continue her son’s fundraising efforts and has just finished her fourth charity cycle ride event from Paris to London.

Members of Dan’s family including his wife Lucy Higgins also placed remembrance tiles on the Wall of Hope at the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at Imperial College.

The family were given a tour of the research facility at Hammersmith Hospital. They met lead scientist Dr Nelofer Syed and lead neuro-surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital where Dan was treated.

Dan’s wife, Lucy, said: “Dan was committed to help raise awareness and his campaign to raise money for research was incredibly important. Somehow he always managed to remain positive and, more than anything he wanted to give hope to others.

“Dan would say we need to focus on improving research technology and public awareness and look to the future for people who are still alive and help them extend their life expectancy. An increase in funding for research into brain tumours is vital if we are to prevent other families enduring the pain we live with every day.”

BTRC and Brain Tumour Research are campaigning to get the research funding for brain tumours to increase from £30million per year to £35million.

In the UK 16,000 every year are diagnosed with a brain tumour, according to Brain Tumour Research.
