Five baby rabbits that are just days old have been brought to a Leatherhead charity, as staff gear up for a deluge of orphaned wildlife this Easter.

The long-eared visitors at Wildlife Aid's rescue and rehabilitation centre in Leatherhead were brought in from Heywood's Heath in Sussex after they were dug from their warren by a dog.

Initially, five baby rabbits were brought in but one had sadly died on arrival and another soon died from injuries it sustained.

Some of the bunnies are too young to even open their eyes

They are believed to be just a few days old as one had opened eyes.

The charity, which has recently seen a spate of thefts of charity property, has asked if any potential donors are willing to give them a second-hand forklift truck, utility type golf buggy or electric load carrier to help as its peak season begins.

Charity head Simon Cowell said: “Spring has started early this year and we have already had our first orphaned foxes and squirrels.

“Over the coming weeks, we will see hundreds more young orphans and the centre will struggle to cope.

“It would really help us to have some equipment to move food pallets and heavy goods around the centre, so if any businesses or golf clubs have a forklift or electric buggy that they no longer use and that works, we’d gladly take it off their hands.

“It doesn’t matter what it looks like, we are not fussy.”

He added that the baby bunnies were “doing well” and are with a rabbit carer for feeding.

He said: “They have recently all opened their eyes and we hope that in a few months we will be able to return them back to the wild.”
