The MP for Tooting is taking action against the housing crisis facing London.

Since she was elected, Rosena Allin-Khan has had thousands of constituents contact her with housing issues.

The average rent in Tooting is more than £1,800 a month while the average price of a home is £700,000.

Dr Allin-Khan said: "I rent my flat in Tooting, I understand the pressures local people face.

"People who have spent years making Tooting their home are being priced out."

The MP has visited the two biggest Housing Associations in Tooting, Wandle and Viridian, to find out what they are doing to help solve the housing crisis.

She added: "Hardworking Tooting people should be able to own their own home, I’m working with the Mayor, Sadiq Khan, on plans to build genuinely affordable homes.

"We need more genuinely affordable homes to buy and rent to be built across Tooting.

"That is why I’ll be working with the Mayor to ensure we build a mix of social homes, affordable shared ownership and homes available for rent which is capped in line with average local earnings."

Rosena visited a new Tooting development, built by Wandle, which provides good quality homes at an affordable price for local people.

Tracey Lees, Wandle chief executive, said: "There are too many people in Tooting, and across south London, who do not have a place to call home."

"On her visit Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP saw the positive effect a good quality, affordable home, can have on a family’s life.

"She understands the desperate need for more homes and that everyone, including government, has an important role to play.

"Wandle has a proud history of providing homes for people in need, and over the next four years we plan to build 1,000 more across south London."

Nick Apetroaie, CEO of Viridian Housing, added:"Solutions to the housing crisis will be best achieved through joint working with local communities to understand their needs and ensure that they are provided for.

"As part of this, we need to engage and have an open dialogue with MPs. We were delighted to have the opportunity to talk to Dr Allin-Khan about the specific need in her constituency.

"This is a step towards creating a practical and deliverable increase in our housing supply in Tooting and across the rest of London."
