A petition has been launched requesting MP for Battersea Jane Ellison hold an "an open-forum, in-person town hall meeting" as soon as possible in her constituency.

It states constituents have "urgent, time-sensitive questions and concerns" and that Brexit is causing a "great deal of turmoil, uncertainty and worry", especially with regard to the position of EU nationals, their families and the single market.

James Williamson, a British citizen living in Battersea, launched the petition as he is worried about the future of his wife, an Irish national, and the future of all EU nationals across Battersea.

He said: "It’s really upsetting and worrying that the government isn’t doing anything to guarantee their rights, the rights of thousands of people in our communities.

"75 per cent of Wandsworth voted to remain. Jane Ellison voted to remain.

"We feel abandoned by her."

In response, Mrs Ellison said: "I know how concerned people are and securing the rights of our EU friends and neighbours as quickly as possible is my top priority.

"Anyone who wants to discuss their situation with me should contact my office to arrange a one-to-one meeting - I have already met many of my EU constituents to talk about their individual situations and corresponded with hundreds more."

The time requested in the petition, which had at the time of writing 234 signatures, with the Battersea MP is at least one hour, giving residents the chance to ask their MP questions directly and receive "direct" answers.

Mrs Ellison joined the majority of MPs on March 13 in voting to authorise the Government to trigger article 50. The bill has been rejected twice in the House of Lords with specific concern given to the lack of guarantee given to the rights of EU nationals living in the UK but was passed last night.

Mr Williamson, 29, who works in PR, said he feels his MP has "failed" to alleviate the concerns of Battersea residents by not voting in favour of securing EU citizens’ rights.

He said: "It’s her job to speak to us.

"If she won’t speak to us how can she speak for us.

"We are not bargaining chips in EU negotiations."

Mr Williamson added: "I am bitterly disappointed by how she voted.

"As a constituency MP, Jane Ellison is supposed to care about her constituents, share our values and act accordingly.

"By voting to deny EU citizens in Battersea the guarantee we need, people might question whether she is fulfilling these duties or not.

"The offer of one on one meetings is not enough. Jane Ellison has thousands of constituents, and hundreds have requested a Town Hall event. The issue of how the Government pursues Brexit is not going away and our concerns are urgent."
