A 100-year-old New Malden man has appeared in court accused of a string of historical sexual attacks against a schoolgirl.

Douglas Hammersly appeared at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday charged with three sexual offences against a girl under 14 during the 1970s.

He now faces an anxious wait while a psychiatric report is compiled so that the judge can decide whether or not he is fit to stand trial due to his age.

The three charges of indecent assault all relate to the same girl, who is now aged in her 40s, with one of the attacks alleged to have taken place in 1977, the other two in 1979.

A decision will be heard on Friday, March 31, just 27 days before his 101st birthday.
