A DJ has bagged himself his dream job on the airwaves after working his way up from volunteering at a cancer hub’s radio station and becoming a viral star.

Dave Goodings, 22, from Surbiton, started an evening show with Kiss FM after a heartfelt birthday surprise for his grandmother went global.

From July 2016: Surbiton grandson surprises his Epsom nan on her birthday with 'radio' messages - and her reaction is lovely

Dave became the nation’s sweetheart back in July after surprising his Nan, 86-year-old Iris Howard, with recordings of birthday wishes from her friends and family.

The video received a staggering 35,000 views in just five days after he posted it to his Facebook page.

Content circulator Unilad contacted the youngster about sharing the clip on their sites, and it was then viewed more than 7,000,000 times – which Dave has described as “completely crazy”.

Since, Dave has landed a presenting role on a weekday evening show at radio giant Kiss FM. This opening heralds him as one of the youngest presenters on UK commercial radio.

In the 7-10pm slot, he plays mixes of UK Top 40 chart hits to a popular audience.

Before his big break, the up-and-coming star volunteered on a hospital radio station at the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital.

In February 2013, he secured a £5,000 donation to help save the station at the Sutton cancer hub on an episode of Channel 4’s Deal or No Deal.

Various members of Dave’s family were treated at the hospital, and so supporting the station remained a cause “close to his heart”.

Dave said: “Although I am lucky enough to broadcast on a national station I plan to keep volunteering for Radio Marsden as it's such a great charity and very close to my heart.”
