This is the moment the lead singer of Mancunian indie band The Courteeners stormed off stage at Kingston’s Hippodrome after being struck in the head with a bottle during a gig.

The band was only three songs through their gig at the popular venue in Kingston town centre on Thursday night when the bottle, which is believed to have been plastic, was thrown from the crowd at frontman Liam Fray.

The moment was captured on video by one fan, which shows the charismatic frontman being knocked backwards by the bottle, before removing his guitar and leaving the stage.

Kingston councillor Jon Tolley, who runs the New Slang night at the Hippodrome and put on the gig, apologised on Twitter afterwards.

He posted: “Entirely impressed by and sorry for Liam, the band, MGMT and crew at tonight's Courteeners gig. All dealt well with a shit situation.

“Not sure on repercussions yet. Liam's fine, but there should be no doubt that it was entirely right to pull the gig.”

The Manchester band were performing at the Hippodrome as part of their tour for new album Mapping the Rendezvous.

Fans took to Twitter to vent their anger at the abruptly cancelled gig and question security at the venue.

T Shockers posted: “Shock the Courteeners get bottled at a gig in Kingston, dodgy place.

Pblud posted: “All the way to Kingston to see the Courteeners and on the 3rd song someone throws a bottle.”

In October last year, an Enemy gig at the Fighting Cocks pub organised by cllr Tolley’s Banquet Records had to be evacuated after someone set off a firework.

Two people had to be taken to hospital.
