A swan has had to be rescued from the A3 at Cobham by firefighters and police after it got itself into a bit of a flap.

The animal rescue team at Painshill fire station were alerted at 12.56pm to the swan's plight between Cobham and Wisley.

Surrey Police officers were also on hand to net the bird.

Lawrie Brailey, media manager and cameraman for Wildlife Aid, said he and founder Simon Cowell had been called by the police to help capture the swan.

He said: "It's in one of our ponds getting fed up. We were called by the police who were told the swan was a danger to the traffic.

"We rushed over there and the firefighters were stood there with a net not knowing quite what to do.

"Simon took the net and chased it into a hedge and caught it in the net.

"It's now eating some grain and hopefully should go back within the next 48 hours."

Mr Cowell said: "He decided to run for it and ran up the bankside away from the road and ran through a thicket of brambles, which was painful.

"He was very thin, so we decided to bring him back to feed him. It was a young swan - the parents tend to drive them away and they tend to think the road is water."

Mr Cowell said any donations to Wildlife Aid would be welcome, and can be made here.
