Children's favourite the Gruffalo has been causing a stir at Chessington World of Adventures.

The towering figure, standing 7ft tall, has been spotted on the Wild Wood lawn at the Chessington theme park, after arriving earlier this week.

His appearance has sparked speculation about what this means for Chessington – but park bosses are remaining tight-lipped.

Park divisional director Tim Harrison-Jones said: “We are absolutely thrilled to introduce The Gruffalo to Chessington World of Adventures resort.

“He’s causing quite a stir with guests already with his imposing character and notable features.

“Kids and parents alike have been excited to see him appear at Chessington and we can’t wait to reveal yet more Gruffalo news in 2017. Watch this space.”

Families will be kept in suspense until the new year, when park bosses say the Gruffalo’s sudden appearance will be explained.

The Gruffalo features in the children’s book of the same name, written by playwright Julia Donaldson and selling more than 13 million copies.

It has won a number of prizes for children’s literature and even been developed into plays on Broadway and in the West End.

Chessington World of Adventures includes more than 40 rides and attractions in ten themed lands.

It also boasts a zoo and sea life centre with more than 1,000 animals.

The iconic Bubbleworks ride closed for good last month after 26 years.
