The first image of the proposed Meyer Bergman development on Tolworth's Toby Jug site - where the company hopes to build even more homes than Tesco's proposed 705 - has been released.

The image shows several blocks of flats, from seven to nine storeys in height, which feature apparently larger non-residential spaces on the ground floor.

Several of the buildings have mansard-style roofs, similar to buildings nearby on the Tolworth roundabout.

There is an angular pavilion in the centre of the sketch and pedestrians can be seen on either side of what appears to be a wide boulevard.

The plans will be shown off in more detail at a public exhibition on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm in St George's Church, Hamilton Avenue.

Meyer Homes said in a statement: "This site has long been accepted as an appropriate location for residential development, having been vacant for 15 years.

"The image provides a glimpse of the alternative design approach being taken, which seeks to respond to the need for large sites, like this, to deliver the new homes that the area and London so desperately needs, whilst also reflecting the suburban context."

Surrey Comet:

Meyer Bergman, which bought the land from Tesco a year ago, announced last week that it will apply to build even more than 705 homes on the site – the amount previously rejected by Kingston Council.

This website reported on fears that London Mayor Sadiq Khan will overrule a rejection this time around if the application meets his criteria for affordable housing.

A closer view

A Meyer Homes flyer told residets: "Meyer Homes remains committed to delivering significant investment in this site.

"We have therefore been looking to develop proposals which reflect the aspirations of the Greater London Authority to see this site deliver a greater number of new homes to the area than previously proposed.

"This includes an increase in the amount and proportion of affordable homes, meeting one of the new London Mayor’s most important manifesto commitments."
