A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man from Walton more than 20 years ago.

Justin Clarke, 60, of no fixed address, was charged with the murder of 43-year-old Paul Milburn after being extradited from Berlin to the UK on Monday.

Detectives from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (BCH MCU) arrested Mr Clarke, who they had wanted to speak to since the murder, in the German capital in February.

Mr Milburn was shot dead in his car in Noke Lane in St Albans on Monday, April 26, 1993 at about 4.25pm.

Adrian Foster, chief crown prosecutor for the Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: "Following an investigation by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against Justin Clarke.

"Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit to charge Justin Clarke with murder, conspiracy to defraud, offering to supply controlled drugs, and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, namely murder.”

Mr Clarke appeared at Hatfield Remand Court on Tuesday morning on a first instance arrest warrant, and appeared again today at St Albans Crown Court.
