A pet lover is calling for cameras to be installed in a Norbiton street after one of her cats was killed by speeding traffic and another hit in the space of six weeks.

Nikki Dean, 38, was away on holiday when her six-year-old cat Pippin escaped from her garden and was killed by a passing vehicle in Park Road on Wednesday last week.

Just six weeks earlier, her nine-year-old cat Vinnie returned home “covered in blood” after being hit by a car in the area.

Ms Dean, of Park Road, said: “My neighbour rang me and told me they saw the whole thing. Pippin managed to escape out of the gate.

“She told me that they were speeding so fast that they hit the cat and carried on. She was traumatised by it as well.

“My partner was nearly knocked down there as well, it’s really dangerous. So many cats have gone missing in this area.”

Ms Dean said she was so concerned when Vinnie was hit that she began keeping her cats indoors, but last week Pippin managed to escape.

Since its death, Ms Dean said she has been left devastated and has had to take time off work.

She added: “Me and my partner are so dedicated to our animals. It’s being a member of our family, we’d do anything for animals. It’s just been so sad.

“Pippin was in perfect health, she was amazing, She was lovely - it’s just really tragic for me.”

Ms Dean has now started a petition urging Kingston Council to consider speed prevention measures in the road and says it is only a matter of time before a resident is hurt.

Any petition submitted to the authority needs 500 signatures to secure a public debate.

She added: “We’ve never seen anyone with even the hand held speed cameras on the road.”

A Kingston Council spokeswoman said: “We welcome petitions from people who live, work, or study in the borough - this is one of the ways you can raise issues or concerns, and bring about change in your community.
