Tesco customers are warned to be vigilant after reports of a ‘card-trapper’ scam being used outside Tesco Metro in Molesey.

Surrey Police officers were notified of potential fraud outside the supermarket on Sunday, September 18.

Officers believe a device appeared to have been inserted into the cash machine slot, preventing bank cards being rejected by the machine, leaving the fraudster to retrieve it when the card holder leaves.

PC Kyle Wilkins said: “The device is small in size and often similar to a paperclip. It is easy to make or obtain online and difficult to spot once it has been inserted into the card slot.

“Following my enquiries, it is apparent that most members of the public assume that if a card has been swallowed by a machine then it is “safe” and do not necessarily think about getting the card blocked straightaway.

“As well as making people aware of this device and this particular method, I would also like to remind them to report their bank cards as stolen even if they believe they have been swallowed by their cash machine.

“I would also like to add that if people do have any concerns about withdrawing money, then using ATM machines inside the banks is the safest option.”

Anyone who believes they may be the victim of a similar scam should call Surrey Police on 101.
