Bring-your-daughter-to-work day was very different for one mum when Olympic hockey gold medallist Sophie Bray dropped in at Surbiton’s Royal Star and Garter home.

The ex-Surbiton forward, from Claygate, showed off the gold for residents on Wednesday. Her mum Geneen has worked in the Upper Brighton Road home as a physiotherapist since 2013.

Great Britain’s women seized their first ever gold after a tense penalty shoot-out against the Netherlands, having drawn 3-3 in normal time.

Bray, now at East Grinstead, told the Surrey Comet: “It’s been a whirlwind of a few days.

“The travelling support was amazing - I had my mum, my dad and my two brothers out, which was so nice to know that they’re in the crowd as you’re on the podium.

Bray began her career at the club when she was still at Tiffin Girls’ School, and says she hopes her gold medal inspires others to get into the sport.

She said: “I absolutely loved playing at [Surbiton] - they did do much for me and helped my game so much. To think that maybe this gold medal can help youngsters pick up sport or even other people go back to the sport would be incredible, and ultimately as a team that’s what we set out to do, to inspire people to play.

“So I really hope people are inspired and they go pick up a stick and give it go, because the sport has given me so much and it would be great that this would be able to give something back to the sport.”
