A great-great grandmother who emigrated from Calcutta to Twickenham in the fifties is celebrating her 100th birthday.
Greta Taylor was born on August 20 in India and lived there with her husband William, who worked on the railways.
The pair, who married in 1935, settled in Twickenham in 1953 after the civil war broke out in India, travelling by boat to England, with their children Shirley, Robert, Neville, Colleen, Carl, Joyce, Delphine and Clive, before their other daughters June and Pamela were born.
She now has 22 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.
Granddaughter Rebecca Taylor-Sims said the family had to adjust to British life from a lifestyle where servants did most household chores. She said: “She had to learn and do everything herself when she moved to England and couldn’t afford any help at home.”
Some years after Mr Taylor died in 1988, Mrs Taylor moved to her home in Bridge Court, Weybridge.
Her family will throw a celebration for her with more than 60 members of her family at her home today.
