Three adults escaped a fire in a first floor flat above a jewellery shop in Upper Tooting Road on Tuesday night.

Part of the ground floor shop and a small portion of the first floor flat were damaged by a fire that broke out at about 11.45pm.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters tackled the flames. The brigade was called at 11.49pm and the fire was under control by 1.29pm.

The three adults had left the flat before the brigade arrived and there were no reports of injuries.

The fire crews were called by a passer-by who saw the smoke.

There are not believed to have been any smoke alarms fitted in either the shop or the flats above.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together. This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.

“Candles, incense sticks and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave them unattended and keep them away from anything that could catch fire such as curtains, furniture or clothes.

“We advise to place these in a suitable fire resistant candleholder which won’t be knocked over, and make sure you put them out entirely when you leave the room and especially before bed.”

Crews from Tooting, Wimbledon and Mitcham attended.
