Kingston Council has reassured tenants of a Norbiton council estate that it will “explore options” for rehoming residents once it is razed and rebuilt.

Tenants had raised concerns that a draft document that sets out the council’s policy for regenerating its housing stock, and is currently under consultation, failed to guarantee residents would be rehomed if displaced.

The document says there is “no guarantee” of returning to redeveloped properties.

The Cambridge Road estate is set to double in size from 922 to 1,699 homes.

Jill Preston, of the Cambridge Road Estate Community Group, said: “A lot of elderly people are starting to get really worried. Those people have been here 30 or 40 years, they don’t want to be told they’re coming back to a one-bedroom flat.

“Who decided who comes back? They’re saying over the next six weeks they’re going to be doing the consultation,; how can they be consulting the people if they don’t know what they’re offering?”

Kingston Council announced its intention to regenerate the estate – the largest in the borough – in June 2015.

A Kingston Council spokesman said: “We will work closely with our residents to explore options that will enable those who want to stay on the estate to remain there post-regeneration, either in their existing home, a refurbished property or a new property.

“We don’t yet know who may need to move as this will depend on the preferred option, but it is unlikely that anyone will need to move for several years whilst we develop proposals.”

The consultation ends on Friday, September 9. Visit kingston.gov.uk.
