Kingston Council’s leader took part in an hour-long Twitter Q&A today using #KingstonConvos.

Kevin Davis attempted to answer concerns about Brexit, schools, affordable housing and Kingston’s planning agenda in 140 characters or less.

Q. #KingstonConvos In 1965 Kingston moved from Surrey to GL, no vote from the public. Pls could we get a referendum to move back?

A. We still have Surrey County Council in Kingston, but it's not for me to declare a referendum.

Q. What is your vision for #Tolworth Court Farm Nature Reserve? Why rename it to Tolworth Park?

A. The vision is to open it up for more visitors and locals who can learn more about environment and sustainability.

Q. There are now a number of empty units on New Malden high street - what plans are there to better support it?

A. Kingston Futures is looking to bring more businesses into the borough and they'll work with shop owners to see where they can support.

Q. What level of EU funding do RBK or employers within RBK currently receive and what plan is in place match this?

A. In 2015/16 the council received £52k in funding, in 2016/17 we received no funding.

Q. Given the increased numbers of children with SEND, how many specialist teaching units in local schools are you planning?

We are working with free school providers to open two SEND schools within the borough #KingstonConvos

Q. What are you doing to introduce zero emissions vehicles (which could also save us money) into council’s fleet of vehicles?

A. The uptake is included in our Air Quality Action Plan, we're working with Source London on electric vehicles. Introduction of cleaner taxis also relies on TFL who we're working with.

Q. #KingstonConvos growth should be equal for all, not favouring the rich. What's being done about making new housing affordable?

A. We're working hard with the government and the Mayor of Ldn to change the affordable housing system for the better.

Affordable housing should be part of all new developments, but we'll be targeting council owned land #KingstonConvos.

Q. What plans and timescale for Cambridge Rd Est regeneration? High-rises to come down?

A. CRE is currently 830 homes, and we hope to bring that up to 1600, however plans are still in the early stages.

We’ve yet to finalise a redesign, but residents will be able to take part in consultations.

Q. What are your thoughts on getting people out of their cars and creating walkable communities?

A. Agree it's imperative to do that, but it's not just about cars/walking, it's also about encouraging other sustainable forms of transport.
