CAMPAIGNERS against a new town in the greenbelt outskirts of Cobham were left disappointed when Guildford councillors voted to keep the site open for development.

The Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust had campaigned heavily alongside residents to prevent about 2,000 homes being built at the Three Meadows and Wisley Airfield site in Hatch Lane, Ockham.

Developer Wisley Property Investments also wanted to build primary and secondary schools, along with a doctor’s surgery, shopping centre and a floodlit sports pitch, but their plans were rejected on April 6 at a Guildford Council planning meeting.

However, despite the plan’s rejection, 33 councillors at a planning meeting held on Tuesday, May 24, voted for the site to remain in the draft Local Plan, opposed to 11 who asked for it to be removed.

The plan identifies several possible sites to develop future housing, employment and infrastructure needs.

The final draft local plan was agreed and put forward for a six-week consultation starting on June 6.
