Frozen food supermarket giant Iceland has announced the closure of its New Malden store – the third household name to announce it will leave the borough within two weeks.
The supermarket joins fellow New Malden High Street store The Co-Operative, which will close on Saturday May, 14, and Lidl, in Adams Walk, Kingston, which will close its store in June.
Famous retailer BHS could also close stores in Eden Street with the company entering administration earlier this week, putting 11,000 jobs at risk across the country.
A spokeswoman confirmed Iceland would be closing at some point in mid-June.
Business owners and small retailers have expressed concern at the growing exodus.
Peter Findlater, store manager at Tudor Williams in New Malden High Street, has called on a collaborative effort between Kingston Council, the government and retailers to “better advertise” the borough’s high streets and control escalating rents.
