Following the formation of an Elmbridge action group against noise from Heathrow, another task group has flown into action – this time calling on Esher and Walton MP Dominic Raab to back plans for Heathrow expansion for a “long and fruitful relationship” with the community.

Back Heathrow’s members have collectively signed a letter to Mr Raab, asking him to consider the “thousands of local residents who currently rely on Heathrow for their jobs” as well as “the next generation who hope to build their careers and lives around a thriving Heathrow”.

They oppose the sentiments of new Heathrow opposition group Rage, which is lobbying against the noise created by “low-flying” planes.

As one of the 102 residents who signed the pro-expansion letter, Corinne Barker from Thames Ditton said: “I feel passionately that our community needs a bigger and better Heathrow if we want to secure our future.

“Those who oppose expansion are a very small minority and we who have signed this letter are just the tip of the iceberg of those in the community who back Heathrow.”

The group urged Mr Raab, who has not yet determined his position on expansion at Heathrow, to hold the airport to account “over its commitments to reducing noise through quieter aircraft, steeper approaches and improved public transport access”.

Rob Gray, Back Heathrow’s campaign director, said: “Heathrow is a huge success story and Elmbridge residents rightly feel proud of all the jobs the airport brings to the community.

“There is massive support for Heathrow expansion from the majority of UK businesses, international airlines and residents living near the airport. Plane noise can be a concern for some, but overall noise levels around Heathrow have been massively reduced since 1974. The Airports Commission has concluded that Heathrow should be bigger.”
