Nine fire engines and 66 firefighters were called to the burning building in Corkran Road, off Langley Avenue, just before 2.30am.

Two people were in the house when the fire broke out and one was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Both said they escaped after they were woken by a smoke alarm.

Police said the detached property was undergoing refurbishment when the fire started.

A Surbiton firefighter said: "Initially we were just called to reports of smoke but it was going like anything when we turned up.

"Our attack was hindered because of some large steel gates and it took us sometime to get in."

Police cordoned off Corkran Road while firefighters continued to tackle the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
