Four fire crews were called to a blaze behind shops near New Malden's Fountain pub last night.
Firefighters on New Malden's white watch were called to Malden Road at about 3.30am.
The fire began underneath a metal staircase behind the parade, and was starting to spread to flats and shops in the building as firefighters arrived.
But the New Malden crew said this morning they had prevented the spread. Flames caused only "minimal" damage to the shops, the added.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
