Officers also hope to trace a couple who stopped to check on the girl’s welfare. One of the couple, a woman aged about 25, had a blonde bob and was wearing a denim jacket.

Detective Inspector Nicky Arrowsmith said: "Our investigation is moving forward and we are currently seeking the whereabouts of an individual whose identity is known to us.

"As we progress this investigation I would like to reassure local residents that there is no cause for alarm.

"Local officers from Richmond upon Thames borough continue to conduct reassurance patrols in the area and anyone who is concerned and needs to speak with an officer is invited to contact their neighbourhood policing team by dialling 101.

"In particular, I would appeal to the couple who approached the victim to call us. They may hold vital information about what happened."
